INCI: Propanediol
CAS: 504-63-2
Propanediol 1,3 is a natural organic compound derived from corn or beet sugar with the formula CH2(CH2OH)2. It is a colorless viscous liquid that is miscible (dissolvable) with water. A good natural alternative to propylene glycol, it’s used as a humectant, hair & skin conditioner, preservative booster, emollient, and solvent. It can increase the effectiveness of other ingredients. It provides a light, non-sticky, slightly dry skin feel.
Propanediol is a considered a safe, well-tolerated ingredient, not likely to cause sensitivity.
Benefits:
Light, non-sticky skin feel
Green substitute for propylene glycol from a renewable resource
Viscosity enhancer
Clarity enhancer for surfactant systems
Increased freeze/thaw and heat stability
Low potential to irritate or sensitize skin
Good solvent for hard to dissolve ingredients as well as botanical extracts
Boosts efficacy of preservatives Hygroscopic, hydrates skin and hair well
Usage 1-20%, 1-3% most common, safe in leave-on products at concentrations of up to 39.9%
